Family Support Educational Advocacy

General Information:

This program provides educational advocacy to families of children from birth to age 26 who are experiencing problems in navigating the educational system and obtaining a free and appropriate education. Parents obtain the help of an experienced educational advocate who would assess their cases and develop strategies to obtain appropriate educational services.
This service is funded by New York State Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD).

Services:

Parents will receive assistance with matters such as presentation at department of education related meetings, related services, due process, transition, busing, behavior intervention plans, school transfers, evaluations and placement. The educational advocate assist parent with one to one reviews of their children’s Individualized Educational Program and provides information on the Individual with Disabilities Educational Act and training for parents available through the Metropolitan Parent Center and other resources. 

Who is eligible for this service?

● Families residing in Manhattan (families living in other boroughs may contact the  Metropolitan Parent Center for assistance).
● Child most have a documented developmental disability (documentation required)
● Child’s age from birth to age 26.
