Strategies for Managing Challenging Behavior in Children with Autism / Estrategias para Manejar Comportamientos Desafiantes en Niñ@s con Autismo
This presentation will explain how challenging behaviors often displayed by children with ASD (aggression, tantrums, self-injury, disruptive behavior) serve as a function or purpose for that child.
We will cover why challenging behavior occurs and how to prevent it, respond to it, and replace it with more appropriate/prosocial behaviors as well as how to assess the function(s) of challenging behavior by identifying the antecedents that “trigger” it and the consequences that follow problem behavior (the ABC’s of behavior).
We will focus on intervention strategies to address the challenging behavior--specifically, prevention strategies (how to prevent the challenging behavior by changing the antecedents that trigger it), teaching/replacement strategies (how to teach skills to replace the behavior with more desirable behavior), and response/management strategies (how to respond to challenging behavior by changing the consequences that follow it and rewarding desirable behaviors instead).
Esta presentación explicará cómo los comportamientos desafiantes mostrados por los niños con TEA (agresión, rabietas, autolesiones, comportamiento perturbador) sirven como función o propósito para ese niño.
Cubriremos por qué ocurre el comportamiento desafiante y cómo prevenirlo, responder a él y reemplazarlo con comportamientos más apropiados/prosociales, así como también cómo evaluar las funciones del comportamiento desafiante identificando los antecedentes que lo "desencadenan" y las consecuencias que siguen al comportamiento problemático (los ABC's de comportamiento).
