OVERVIEW: A statewide autism training program to ensure appropriate recognition and response techniques for handling emergency situations involving people with autism and/or developmental disabilities has been established through the enacted 2018-19 State Budget.
The NYC Department of Education has released its annual report on special education. The following is from the introductory paragraph:
Nearly 50,000 New York City students were denied special education services to which they were legally entitled in the 2016–17 school year. That means that more than one-quarter of city children who were assigned specialized programs didn’t take part in them.
Special educators are fanning out across Capitol Hill Tuesday, spreading a few targeted messages for Washington lawmakers: Congress should pass a budget that allocates more money to special education and gifted education, oppose efforts to divert public money to private school vouchers, and fight any bill that would cut Medicaid coverage for children's health services.
